Portovenere is a nice town on the northeast coast of Italy, featuring in the UNESCO World Heritage list. This night shot was taken during a catholic festival, held once an year. Traditionally it involves, among other things, the lighting of countless candles and torches all across town, especially around the church that you can see in the far left (a pretty scenic closeup is featured in another deviation). The panorama itself is composed by 10 pictures, taken with a tripod stuck on the pier's wall. The stitching work was done with Autopano, Panorama Tools, Hugin and Enblend, plus some fixing and retouch with GIMP. It took between 3 and 4 hours, included processing time and manual blending corrections. The blurred masts of the luxury yachts in the foreground were unavoidable (at least for me) due to the combination of long exposures and waves. I quite like the big lens flare caused by the central lamp post, but i can perfectly understand those who will loathe it. |

Under blue moon I saw you
So soon you'll take me
Up in your arms
Too late to beg you or cancel it
Though I know it must be the killing time
Unwillingly mine
KILLING MOON

I do work sometimes with panorama assemblies, and I think assembly then in Photoshop using Free Transform and eraser brush is the best way. But I saw you hi-res image, and it is perfect: impossible to distinguish the junctions. Did you already print it, put in a frame and hang in yur room wall ? You should !
Man, nice work, congratulations !
You did an excellent work, no stitch is visible, it looks as a single image taken with a fisheye lens (hence the curving effect) and croped. The exposure is perfect, even the halo is not at all disturbing and i like two details close to it that can make the overall mood of this picture, a romantic couple in a contemplating attitude and a family group. The number of people along all the places is amazing, it seems a very cosmopolitan place but at the same time maintaining its traditions and a familiar popular ambiance. I like how all the image seems centered on the most elevated part of the town with the church tower and fortress, concentrating around and then becoming gradually more sparse to the sides. I would only make a slight crop at the right in order to exclude the man in white shirt and maybe the sitted person too.
Congratulations for this wonderful work!

I figured out that being a panoramic image it was more important to see more of the whole landscape at once instead of the details.
And more importantly, not everybody uses 1600x1200, most people still use 1024x768 at most. The full size image is 1123 pixes of height, so it would require vertical scrolling at that resolution. 600px of height it the only one that fits in 768px of vertical resolution (considering all the crap toolbars people usually attach to their browser windows).
But one thing I will surely try to do: make the link to the full version image stand out a lot more, so that everyone can get a chance to check out the large image.

Using a fisheye is something I want to try sooner or later, but with my current camera I don't have the possibility to attach lens extensions, so for now I can't do that and use stitching software to obtain the same result. And probably even with a fisheye lens stitching 2 shots would have been needed to cover such a large field of view (in this case it was more than 180°, if I remember correctly).

The people in the center of the image is one of the things that I like a lot of this picture myself.
They were quite messy to stitch tough, because they were near the camera and kept moving.

There was a major religious festival going on, and people from all over the surrounding tourist towns were coming to see it, along with a lot of the rich elite and their yachts.
It was a huge mess, and just walking around from place to place to shoot other photos was a problem (see also this other deviation from the same night).
But it was fun : )

Great idea ! I didn't notice that at first, but now that you point it out, I see that it's completely out of place, it contrasts too much with the black background of the sea. I will crop out that part soon.
Thanks for all the kind words and most of all for your constructive criticism !
